AN EXCELLENT OPEN-ENDED LEARNING OPPPORTUNITY

Ten by Ten is a website that defines itself as,
"an interactive exploration of the
words and pictures that define the time."

Every hour, 10x10 collects the 100 words and pictures that matter most on a global scale, and presents them as a single image, taken to encapsulate that moment in time. Over the course of days, months, and years, 10x10 leaves a trail of these hourly statements which, stitched together side by side, form a continuous patchwork tapestry of human life.

One of the unique features that may inspire critical thinking in our students
is the access to the HISTORY of 10x10.

Users may access previous "10 by 10"s, by choosing the HISTORY link
below the grid and choose a previous date back to 2004.

I have looked on the 10x10 site. It does look really cool, I even found a pic of Grand Theft Auto. There could be so many interpretations of the pic. I think this is great for civics could it could also be used for blogging or other courses to see if the students agree with the assesment rendered by the computer.

Activities could range for this such as: Does the #1 deserve to be there? Why does it deserve to be there? Compare the top 10 on this list tp the list that TMZ or People magazine wordle would produce. List the words that you see in these wordles on the Board and then categorize what you see in on the top 10-20 that you see in the 10x10.

What is the difference? What do you think the priority of TMZ is or People?

Another Activity

Take an article from 10x10 and the pic and get the exact story from an another newspaper. How are the same How do they differ

Of course the pic analysis stuff is great too.

Another use is to relate a picture to what you want to teach to activate prior knowledge. Get the kids brainstorming about the pic to get their brains ready to use the categories they already know to understand the new info. That is so important, Dr. Judy Willis in her workshop on reaching the teenaged brain spoke of

Do you have any ideas to add?

One cool thing about this site is that it has been around for almost 10 years. Another project that they have created is called WordCount (http://www.wordcount.org/main.php) where they tally up the over 80,000 most used words in the english language and slap a cool interface over it. Check out their description and examples here http://www.number27.org/wordcount.html
